National Endowment for the Arts 2019 Jazz Master Abdullah Ibrahim (aka Dollar Brand) will perform at the Jazz Standard August 1-4 in the first concerts following the June 28 release of his new album ‘The Balance’ on Gearbox Records. Billboard has premiered the title track by the 84 year old legend: https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/8515663/nea-jazz-master-abdullah-ibrahim-the-balance-premiere
Ibrahim previously sold out two nights at Brooklyn Academy of Music last year and he has performed at Carnegie Hall. He moved to New York in 1965, living there off and on, including a stint at the Chelsea Hotel.
In concert, he will be joined by his longtime band Ekaya.
WHO: Abdullah Ibrahim and Ekaya
WHAT: NYC album release concerts for ‘The Balance’
WHEN: August 1-4, 7:30 and 9:30 sets
WHERE: The Jazz Standard, 116 E. 27th St., New York, NY 10016
A continuation of his life’s work, Ibrahim tries to tap into the moment and into the spiritual inspiration that comes through him. It expands on ideas first developed in earlier compositions like his landmark “Water From An Ancient Well,” about the wisdom of the ancients. ‘The Balance’ contains three solo piano pieces, all of which were fully improvised.
A civil rights icon of South Africa, his song “Mannenberg” (aka “Capetown Fringe”) became the anthem of the movement and he performed at Nelson Mandela’s inauguration. Mandela said, “Bach, Beethoven, we’ve got better.” Ibrahim has played with everyone from Duke Ellington to Max Roach.
Interviews are coming in Jazz Times, Down Beat, NPR, SIRIUS XM, The Wall Street Journal, WBGO, and WNYC.
