About

Bio

Chicago based fiddle player and singer-songwriter Anne Harris has been touring nationally and internationally in the Blues and American Roots genres, gaining fans who are drawn to her uniquely dynamic performances. Her collaborations, live and in-studio, span a large and diverse group of artists, including Markus James, Otis Taylor, Anders Osborne, Living Colour, Shemekia Copeland, Vieux Farke Toure, Guy Davis, Marcella Simien, Cracker, and occasional appearances with hippie legends Jefferson Starship. In 2024 she was awarded the Living Blues Critic’s Choice Award for Best Musician [other] Violin. Anne starred in and wrote the score for the award winning short independent film, “The Musician”, directed by Mark Schimmel. She is the curator and host of a highly acclaimed quarterly women’s music series called ‘She Said’. This series, supported by the Aurora Women’s Empowerment Foundation of Illinois features performances and conversations with extraordinary women and femme musicians. Anne commissioned a violin to be made by Nashville luthier Amanda Ewing, officially recognized by the State of Tennessee as the first accredited Black woman violin luthier in the U.S., making this the first official violin commission on record between two black women- luthier and violinist, in the history of the U.S.

Current projects include:

Halo Rider: Blues-Rock infused Americana band featuring singer-songwriter and guitarist Markus James.

Magnolias: Folk/American Roots band featuring Creole singer-songwriter Marcella Simien

“Once you have witnessed Anne Harris play the violin, you aren’t likely to forget the experience any time soon. It’s not just the wondrous music she makes drawing her bow across the strings, it’s also the way the spirit of the music emanates from her physically. She inhabits the music, or maybe the music inhabits her, but it is impossible not to be drawn under her spell.” (BluesWax)

“Anne is one of the best rock lead guitarists in the U.S. Even more impressive ‘cause she’s playing fiddle.” (David Lowery- founder Cracker, Camper Van Beethovan)

“Anne Harris’ fiddle adds a pure caffeine kick to a repertoire that already synthesizes the best of American music” (Nick Gillespie- journalist and editor Reason Magazine, reviewing live performance with Cracker)

“Anne Harris plays violin like Buddy Guy wields his guitar” (Orange County Register)

“Anne instills every performance with hypnotic virtuosity while summoning the depths of the Blues in dance and gesture, transporting us into her firelight of an ancient campground in some ancestral trance. She has succeeded in re-installing the fiddle as an important Blues instrument.” (Peter Hurley, write Living Blues Magazine)

“Anne Harris has played many Blues festivals but uses the Blues as a starting point. By opening herself up to other realms, a more apt description may be a cosmic consciousness that exhibits a spiritual, humanist philosophy.” (No Depression)
