Bio

Noah Jackson is a GRAMMY-nominated bassist, cellist, composer, and curator from Detroit, Michigan. As a member of NEA Jazz Master Abdullah Ibrahim’s ensemble, Ekaya, and the Abdullah Ibrahim Trio, Jackson has performed internationally to critical acclaim and recorded on the albums The Balance (2019) and “3” (2024). He has also performed with luminaries including Branford Marsalis, Kenny Barron, Kenny Garrett, Terence Blanchard, the Marsalis Family, Tyreek McDole, Isaiah Collier, and Nnenna Freelon. His work on Freelon’s 2021 album, Time Traveler, garnered his first GRAMMY nomination. In 2025, Jackson debuted new original music as a featured artist alongside Kenny Barron at SFJAZZ.

Jackson’s performance credits span the world’s most prestigious stages, from the Blue Note and Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City to international festivals including the North Sea Jazz Festival (Netherlands), London Jazz Festival, Joy of Jazz (South Africa), and the Nice Jazz Festival (France). He is a proud member of the Recording Academy.

As a composer, Jackson was commissioned in 2017 to create and perform original work for “Practicing Silence” at Grace Farms (New Canaan, CT) in collaboration with the American Ballet Theatre. A recipient of Creative Engagement and UMEZ grants from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and the State of New York, he produced On A Turquoise Cloud—a work based on the music of Duke Ellington—at the Schomburg Center in 2019 and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s “The Cube” in 2020. His ensemble, Full Circle, released Contemplations: A Suite in 2011 to critical praise, with a new self-titled album slated for release in 2026. Beyond the stage, he served as the curator and entertainment director at the renowned jazz club Cliff Bell’s in Detroit in 2021.

A graduate of Michigan State University (B.M.) under Rodney Whitaker and the Manhattan School of Music (M.M.) under Dr. Larry Ridley, Jackson is a dedicated educator. He has led masterclasses globally and currently works with students at Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center’s “Black, Brown, and Beige” initiative. He also maintains a connection to his roots as a summer program alum of the Interlochen Arts Academy. Noah Jackson is based in the Detroit area and remains a prolific force on the local, national, and international touring circuits.
