Many folks have reached out to us in response to the act of violence during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl celebration on Wednesday as this occurred near the location of our conference. Thank you to so many for checking on our team and families as many were attending or near the event. All are safe at this time.

Yesterday our team met with the Westin hotel staff in preparation for next week. They reassured us that their internal security team is always staffed appropriately in relation to the number of guests in the hotel. They have onsite security 24 hours a day. The hotel is also employing off duty police officers to work every evening from 8 pm to 4 am during our event. In addition, FAI hires security to manage the private showcase floors nightly to ensure that only conference attendees are in this space.

During the pandemic, FAI created the initiative called Changing the Tune, which is to provide guidance and resources to the Folk Alliance International community to help plan and prepare for an uncertain future. This was done in partnership with Majestic Collaborations and made possible thanks to a grant from Performing Arts Readiness. Part of this included developing an internal Conference Safety Action Plan, which our team is reviewing and updating.

Situations such as these are difficult on many levels. We hope that you feel comfort in knowing heightened measures are being enacted to prepare for your productive and safe trip to KC.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Roe
Interim Executive Director
